Students make cups in fight for clean water worldwide

Students from Truro College together with volunteers from University College Falmouth got their hands dirty in the fight against the lack of clean drinking water worldwide.

The students, who all have learning difficulties, made pottery cups, bowls and the odd snowman for the Cups for Water project which was conceived and has been run since October by Falmouth student Tasha Stephens-Vallecillo. Between them they created over thirty cups.

The Truro College event was arranged by Agent4Change Zak Stanley. Tasha started the project because of the water shortages she encountered whilst painting a mural at a friend’s hostel in Nicaragua, Central America. She was also inspired by a protest, mainly by the less fortunate members of Nicaraguan society, when thousands of residents stopped traffic by placing all their water vessels into the street blocking the main highways of the capital, Managua.

The cups and bowls were displayed as part of an art exhibition at The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro.
