Green Fingered Volunteers Help Restore Historic Liverpool Garden

Between 30 August 2008 and 30 August 2008, in Liverpool

Green Fingered Volunteers Help Restore Historic Liverpool Garden

A burgeoning new community garden is beginning to take shape in Liverpool, through the hard work of Agents4Change volunteers.

The project at Clarke Gardens, Allerton, aims to restore a former botanic park to its earlier glories, including renovating an historic greenhouse which once provided exotic fruits to the wealthy Clarke and Roscoe families of Liverpool.

Fifteen young Agents4Change volunteers, and several Liverpool families, spent Saturday 30th August digging paths, and clearing weeds, so that the allotment can once again grow fruit and vegetables for the benefit of the local community.

The project is being led by the BTCV and the University Of Liverpool Guild Of Students, with a tree nursery and an orchard already being planted. The tree nursery will grow various saplings which can then be sold on, and the orchard will grow apples, pears and berries, to add an element of sustainability to the Allerton locality.

Neil McMahon, BTCV Project Leader on Merseyside, said, "It's great to see so many young people here, and the garden is generating interest from the community. Agents4Change volunteers have added a great deal to our plans at Clarke Gardens, including raised growing beds so that our allotment is wheelchair accessible, and everyone can get involved. We have so many ambitions for restoring Clarke and the continued help of volunteers is vital to that success."

Many thanks must go to Tesco stores at Wavertree, who supplied drinks and energising snacks for the volunteers to enjoy through the afternoon, and BBC Radio Merseyside, who advertised the event throughout the week, spreading the word to the people of Liverpool to get involved with this exciting project.

BTCV need further funding to continue renovation of the site, including a grant to restore 18th century stables, and the celebrated greenhouse, of which there are only two left in existence. Agent4Change coordinator Jon Dean said, "The project here at Clarke Gardens is so embedded in Liverpool history that we will be giving BTCV all the support we can. I'm so proud of our volunteers, and we have all pledged to continue lending a hand here, as we can really see our efforts staring to take shape."
