A Phab Way to Make A Difference
Between 01 November 2008 and 01 November 2008, in Reading
What do you get if you take a group of local young people and mix them with a load of paint, a dash of glue and a bucket full of colouring pens? An amazing Make A Difference Day that's what!
Young people with disabilities from the Berkshire Phab Family Centre suggested the themes. University students from the Reading Audio Visual Enterprise Society created the design. The result was a collaboration which showed that the young people of Reading really do care about making their local area part of a fully inclusive society.
A mixture of paint and collage, volunteers created an original piece of art that brought together music genres, animals, and the globe. Using handprints to make the world at the centre of the picture, drawings and magazine cut outs depicting anything from rap to rabbits were then placed around the edges.
Sue Paver, a Trustee of Berkshire Phab Family Centre, described what she believed her young people took from the day: "Phab is a charity dedicated to promoting the integration of people with and without disabilities. We believe that we need to challenge negative attitudes towards disability, and art is able to do that by allowing everybody to see themselves valued for the contribution they make."
After the centre has received some much needed TLC, the picture will be hung for all visitors to see. Not only that, but the team of university volunteers were invited back to run a similar workshop in the future - proof that a difference definitely was made!
