200 flood affected children benefit from Agent4Christmas!

Between 22 December 2007 and 22 December 2007, in Truro

200 flood affected children benefit from Agent4Christmas! Agents4Change volunteers helped to organise a children's Christmas party to give some cheer to families that were affected by the summer floods in Doncaster.

Around 200 local children enjoyed free food, entertainments and Christmas presents courtesy of local businesses and donations at the party on Saturday 22nd December, at the Toll Bar Club which itself was affected by the floods.

Volunteers played party games with the children and held a contest to make a festive sleigh for Father Christmas out of recycled materials, which was judged by special guests Father Christmas and the Rt. Hon John Healey MP, the MP for Wentworth who is also 'Floods Minister'.

The event was organised by Agent4Change Vicky Powers with the help of the Toll Bar 1 o'clock club and a local church. She said, 'I spent the week before wrapping presents and making pass the parcels, so it was great to see everything come together on the night and all the kids getting excited and enjoying themselves

'We had some selection boxes left over which went to the children's ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Christmas Eve. It's so important to think of the kids who are missing out at Christmas time, whether it's because they are still in temporary accomodation after the floods or due to illness, and I'm really proud of all the volunteers who gave up their time so close to Christmas.'

A Christmas Difference Made By Santa's Little Helpers

Between 11 December 2007 and 11 December 2007, in Liverpool

A Christmas Difference Made By Santa's Little Helpers Christmas Toy Appeal given a helping hand by Agents4Change volunteers.

Young students from Liverpool Community College volunteered their time on Tuesday, the 11th of December, to sort toys donated by the public as part of the Merseyside Christmas Toy Appeal 2007.

Five Agents4Change volunteers helped members of the City of Liverpool Lions Club to organise hundreds of donated toys. The toys were to be sent by different agencies and charities to underprivileged children across Merseyside and Cheshire .

Liverpool Agent Rachel Solomon said: "It was brilliant seeing how successful the evening was. When we first arrived there were so many bags that needed sorting out, but by the end of it, they were all cleared and sorted, ready to be sent off to a deserving child. Santa's Little Scouse Helpers did a fantastic job."

The enthusiastic first-time volunteers themselves thoroughly enjoyed the event. Emma Wray, a 16-year-old from Aigburth, cannot wait to volunteer again, saying: "I loved it and it made me feel dead good to help out!"

Helping Build Young Peoples' Skills

Between 01 December 2007 and 01 December 2007, in Truro

Helping Build Young Peoples' Skills Two young students from Prospects Training Centre used their newly gained skills on the morning of 10th December.

They worked alongside their tutor Kevin Poppleton to build a brick barbeque at sheltered housing for young people in Gloucester.

The barbeque has made the courtyard of the sheltered housing a more useable space for its residents, and gives young people the opportunity to use the skills they already have in volunteering.

This is the first phase of a four part project, building barbeques at each of the young peoples sheltered housing in Gloucester.

Drugs and Rock 'n Roll

Between 01 December 2007 and 01 December 2007, in Truro

Drugs and Rock 'n Roll A concert highlighting the issues around drugs took place in December 2007 for young people around the Greater Manchester region.

Organised by Rebecca Salari, Manchester Agent4Change Music Co was aimed at educating other young people about drugs awareness through music.

The Zion Arts Centre, a creative space for young people in Hulme, hosted the event, which was attended by young people from the ages of 13 upwards.

There were eight acts including MCs, DJs and two dance acts. Each music act performed a track which was written and produced specially for the night focusing on an issue relating to drugs; the tracks were then complied onto a CD and handed out to youths attending the event.

Glynn McCadden, a youth development worker from Eclipse, Manchester Drugs and Alcohol Service for young people, held a stall at the event, providing young people with advice and information on drug related issues. He was impressed with the evening, 'There should be more events like Music Co. in place which provide an alternative means of educating young people about issues such as drugs. It provides an informal environment where young people can feel comfortable with discussing issues which concern them.'
