Bristol Tai Chi

Between 26 September 2008 and 26 September 2008, in Gloucester

To celebrate the opening of Cabot Circus, a free tai chi session was offered to the public to get involved with and learn the centuries old relaxation techniques.

A great mix of young people and adults took part in the free tai chi session offered in the open square in the middle of Cabot Circus. With a professional instructor, the public (with a little encouragement) were more than happy to join in, and found themselves having a great time.

The Big Knit

Between 22 September 2008 and 10 October 2008, in Manchester

The Big Knit

This year, Manchester's Agents4Change volunteers teamed up with Age Concern and Innocent Smoothies to make a BIG difference to The Big Knit!  Over 50 volunteers donned their creative hats and made a fantastic contribution to this quirky campaign, which will see be-hatted smoothie bottles being sold in supermarkets this winter!

In the Uk, over 25,000 older people suffer and die from cold related illnesses during the winter months. It's tough for many to get enough food, warmth or activity to stay fit and healthy. The Big Knit campaign promises to pledge 50p from the sale of every be-hatted smoothie to Age Concern.  The money raised goes towards providing hot meals, blankets and advice to older people on how to keep their houses warm.

A total of 155 hats have been proudly knitted by volunteers in Manchester with overwhelming enthusiasm!  Rachel Penfold, a first time knitter said: "It was a really fun day - I would definitely do it again!"  The project will make a real difference to huge numbers of elderly people this winter and has offered many young people a chance to pick up a new skill along the way!  Agents4Change Project Co-ordinator, Becky Taplin said: "When Age Concern Salford contacted me I thought this was a brilliant opportunity and I am so pleased with the response I have had to the workshops - many volunteers have asked to be involved in future projects like this one!"

Volunteers present Liverpool's watery past!

Between 20 September 2008 and 21 September 2008, in Liverpool

Volunteers present Liverpool's watery past!

Volunteers spent two sessions creating an underwater world to educate and celebrate in equal measure Liverpool's history as as coastal inlet.

Sunday 21st September saw Liverpool City Centre play host to a rather strange collection of sea creatures and nautical figures in celebration of the Seventh Annual Seacycles Parade.  The volunteers assisted in directing the march, and educating the public as to its origins, through contact and flyering.

On Saturday, volunteers spent a creative evening designing and building a collection of underwater costumes for those parading on Sunday to wear.

Schools of fish, gangs of pirates, Noah and his ark, an octopus postman, a smack of jellyfish and even King Neptune himself all made appearances as over one hundred people gathered outside the Wold Museum for the beginning of the procession.

Celebrating Liverpool

The annual Seacycles parade commemorates Liverpool's namesake tidal pool by walking the route of the city's original watercourse. Seacycles sets off from William Brown Street where fishermen and merchants originally tied their boats up hundreds of years ago and makes it way to the Albert Dock where the water would have flowed out to the Mersey. The tidal pool still flows in and out of the city twice a day under our feet, meaning people in Liverpool really do walk on water.

Celebrating Community

This year's Seacycles saw community groups from Granby Adult Learning Centre, Clubmoor Children's Centre, Marybone Community Association and the Bluecoat arts centre, supported by the Agents4Change volunteers, all taking part in workshops to create a range of nautical puppets, banners and costumes to celebrate the city's forgotten history.

Mentoring scheme (Posted by previous Agent 4 Change Laurence Whitaker)

Between 12 September 2008 and 30 December 2008, in London

Do you want a chance to help those who need it most? Then here's your chance to make a really noticeable difference to someones life!

The ELSEP scheme aims to support young adults with autism or learning disabilities towards seeking active employment and/or to begin to engage in an active social life.  The project runs every Monday and Wednesday from10am-3pm at our headquarters in North London.  As a volunteer mentor you would be supporting our members to improve their literacy, numeracy and IT skills, as well as participating in our person cantered workshops that creatively allow our members to explore issues around employment and social expectations within the workplace.

The scheme will breakdown all the aspects of getting a job, from looking, going to interviews, and the social conventions of behaviour in and around the workplace. Life skills will also be explored expanding on the skills many take for granted like simply organising a night out with friends.  This is a unique project as it offers 1-1 support in education, social skills, and how to become more effective in social interaction - something all our members find difficult due to their autism or learning disability.

Send me an email if you want to get involved and I'll put you in touch with Alex and Nicole who run the project. london@comcats.org.uk

The Big Wrap

Between 01 September 2008 and 18 October 2008, in Kent

The Big Wrap

Send a Soldier a Christmas Box with the Big Wrap this October.

As part of CSV Make a Difference Day, cadets and students across Kent have teamed up with SSAFFA to collect and pack Christmas boxes which will be sent to people who are currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Amongst other things, we are appealing for soap, quiz books, pencils and toothbrushes which will be wrapped in a shoe box and sent to nominated service men and women in time for Christmas. In total we aim to send over 200 boxes.

If you can help donate items for a box contact Steff on kent@comcats.org.uk.

The event was more successful than we could ever have imagined with so many items donated, we ran out of boxes! We spent a busy morning sorting and packing before the boxes were ready for shipping to Afghanistan and Iraq.
