Pengegon Allotments
Between 29 October 2008 and 29 October 2008, in Truro
Listeners came to the rescue once more during Make A Difference Week when CSV and Agents 4 Change called for help. A4C stepped in at a moment’s notice to help clear the Pengeggon allotments do that more families can enjoy growing their own vegetables and creating a better community.
Penggeon is an area of extreme poverty and high unemployment and an unhealthy place to grow up. There are higher childhood asthma rates documented in the area.
There is also a high prevalence of crime associated with young people.
The Pengegon Allotments have proved so popular with families since they started just over two years ago Cornwall Neighbourhood for Change have been asked to create even more plots.
Whilst the grownups were busy digging up bushes and clearing piles of compost the youngsters were kept amused by Camborne Wesley church with a craft afternoon. Even so some children couldn't resist the chance of being out in the rain tending their own vegetables as our Community Producer Nina Davey and Agents4Change Ian Chapman and Zak Stanley discovered.
One person said that "the allotments provide a fun place to get fit, it provides a sense of community a place to socialise, and the kids will be eating what they have grown rather than opening a tin which i think will give them a real sense of achievement.".
