MESS - Mile End Sporting Spectacular (Posted by previous Agent 4 Change Laurence Whitaker)

Between 01 August 2008 and 01 November 2008, in London

MESS - Mile End Sporting Spectacular (Posted by previous Agent 4 Change Laurence Whitaker)

A sporting spectacular and free community event will be taking place on Saturday 1st  November at the Ecology Pavilion in Mile End Park.

The Mile End Sporting Spectacular (MESS) will focus on encouraging families and young people to become engaged in their community through sport and the arts.

The event, set up by Laurence Whitaker, 17 and CSV Agent4Change for London, and supported by BBC London will be free of charge and run from 11am till 4pm.

Numerous sports groups will be there giving visitors the chance to get stuck in and find out more about becoming active in the local area. It's a chance to get active with the dance troupes, try your hand at acting with the local amateur dramatics society or have a shot at one of many sports on offer. There'll be a kick around for the kids and a high climbing wall for the more adventurous. There will be performances throughout the day from local bands, actors, dancers and singers to show off talent and entertain the crowds.

Rayne Passmore, Head ranger at Mile End Park, says, "This is an opportunity for the community to come together, to discover what's out there for them to get involved with, to have fun and to be entertained by young local talent!"

If you want to take part or find out more contact Laurence on london@comcats.org.uk or on 020 7643 1341.

Message board for this event

Success in the rain!

Posted on 05 November 2008 14:16:54

Miserable weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of all the volunteers who got involved with this terrific event.

Over 100 volunteers turned out to promote local clubs, kids tried out archery and rock climbing for the first time, WestHam football club passed on some of their skills and encouraged young Bengali Women to become coaches, the Beta Rays performed a charming set and gave us the first play of their debut EP, Flying Fish Theatriks ran a treasure hunt throughout the park and young performers from Young&Talented took to the stage dancing and singing to the crowds.

All in all it was a tremendous event, a big thankyou to everyone who came along and got involved, hopefully I'll see many of you again at future events.
