Avon Place Playground Revamp
Between 14 March 2009 and 14 March 2009, in Reading
After initial meetings with St. John's Primary school, whose playing field backs onto the estate and plaground, we gathered some of the children's designs and ideas for the mural to be painted on the playground wall.
We took these to Thames Valley University (TVU) 6th form art students, who took inspiration from the pictures, and added their own creative flair.
Oli and I went to the playground with a couple of volunteers a couple of days before the event to prime the walls ready for the event on Saturday.
After taking some of the TVU students up to BBC Berkshire for an interview about the project on Saturday morning, and to publicise the event, we all headed down to the playground to start painting. The students each took separate areas of the playground walls and began painting.
Overall there were about 14 volunteers there for the day, and we successfully managed to paint the entire playground, and gained a lot of interest and praise from the local children and parents who had walked past during the day.
The playground looked completely refreshed and welcoming and I think it made a real difference to area.
